Cubs star free agent Kyle Tucker visits with top-tier AL contender
The Chicago Cubs made a blockbuster trade to acquire superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros last offseason, but he is widely expected to leave the team in free agency after just one season.
Tucker did not have the kind of year that Cubs fans were hoping to see. He played well for the most part, but he did not put up the kind of superstar numbers expected. Now, he’s a free agent and free to choose any team to play the next chapter of his career.
It has never been expected that Chicago would pony up the kind of money it would take to re-sign Tucker. That could end up being false, but for now it sure seems like he’s likely to leave.
With that being said, Tucker has received interest and visited with a top-tier American League contender.
As shared by MLB’s official X account, Tucker reportedly visited with the Toronto Blue Jays. Of course, the Blue Jays came up just short in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. Adding Tucker would help them pursue the ultimate goal in 2026.
Losing Tucker would be a tough pill to swallow. In order to get him, the Cubs had to give up one of their top prospects in the form of Cam Smith. Having Tucker for just one season that didn’t result in a championship would be a tough blow.
During the 2025 MLB season with Chicago, Tucker played in 136 games. He dealt with some injury issues and ended up hitting 22 home runs to go along with 73 RBI. In addition, Tucker posted a slash line of .266/.377/.464.
There are going to be plenty of other teams with interest in signing Tucker past the Blue Jays. However, they’re clearly showing heavy interest in him early in free agency.
Unfortunately, the Cubs can almost certainly kiss Tucker goodbye. Jed Hoyer might change his mind and get ultra aggressive to try and re-sign him, but that seems very unlikely based on how the franchise has operated in recent years.
