‘Significant challenges’ Chicago Bears’ Dennis Allen gets real on Shedeur Sanders

NFL: Chicago Bears Training Camp

The Cleveland Browns are giving rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders significant runway, naming him the starter for the remainder of the season, beginning Sunday against the Chicago Bears at what promises to be a frigid Soldier Field.

Coordinator Dennis Allen’s defense has the potential to feast on the fifth-round rookie quarterback, viewed by some ahead of last spring’s NFL Draft as a potential top-10 selection, especially given that Chicago has created a league-high 17 takeaways through the season’s first 14 weeks.

However, Sanders’ film has impressed Allen with what he’s seen so far.

Sunday will mark Sanders’ fourth start of the season, and second appearance against a team that would be in the NFL playoffs, if the regular season ended today.

Allen says that the Bears’ defense needs to be aware of Sanders’ presence in the pocket, above all else.

“I think he does a good job,” Allen told reporters this week, via ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. “Obviously, you still see some signs of a rookie quarterback. But in terms of being a rookie and composure in the pocket. I think you have one pass to Fannin down the defensive left side line, where he stood in the pocket, took a shot in the pocket, yet presented a really good ball for the receiver to catch. So I see a guy that’s got good pocket presence. I see a guy, when he’s out there, that can create. So I think he poses some significant challenges.”

Sanders enters Sunday’s contest completing just 52.4 percent of his passes for 769 yards with five touchdown passes to three interceptions, while adding 50 rushing yards and another score, so far in his career.

In frigid and windy conditions, the Bears may be able to use the weather to their advantage against an inexperienced quarterback but must be leery about his big-play ability, particularly in the vertical passing game.
