Chicago Bears are ‘progressing’ with ‘speed’ to Northwest Indiana site, per Governor

Gov. Mike Braun thinks the Chicago Bears are progressing with speed to Indiana.

In December, Chicago Bears CEO/President Kevin Warren opened the possibility of the team building a new stadium in Northwest Indiana.

The Bears have been in a fight with local and state officials about building in Arlington Heights or Chicago for the past few years. The team doesn’t appear to be making any headway in getting shovels in the ground, something Warren wanted to happen before the end of 2025.

The team plans to fund the stadium privately, but wants help from the government in the form of nearby infrastructure and tax subsidies.

During an interview with WTHR, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun suggested things were moving rapidly in the direction of the Hoosier state landing the Bears.

“They’re seriously looking at other options,” Braun said of the Bears, via a transcription by WNDU. “So, if everything keeps progressing at the speed at which it has over the last week or so, we’ll see. So, we’re going to do everything to make it happen.

“There are a lot of things that could come into play between consummating it and so forth, but now they are seriously looking at other options. So, we’ll see what happens.”

Earlier this week, Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch argued that the new stadium project for the Bears was not a priority for lawmakers this year. It’s not popular with taxpayers who want relief.

“I don’t know anyone that has knocked on a door and (had) someone say anything about the Chicago Bears and we have to stay focused on the things that people care about right now,” Welch said.

Welch didn’t seem to think the Bears were seriously looking at moving east to Indiana. However, Braun doesn’t think the Bears are bluffing, and we’ll see if Warren puts plans in motion to build a new stadium outside of Illinois.

The Kansas City Chiefs recently took $1.8 billion to cross state lines from Missouri to Kansas. Maybe the Bears will do the same.

Based on comments CCS has received from Illinois taxpayers on the stadium project, that could be what the voters want.
