Chicago White Sox trade away Luis Robert Jr. to the New York Mets
The Chicago White Sox have been making moves during the 2026 MLB offseason, and on Tuesday night, they continued to do just that. The team has reportedly been talking to multiple teams regarding making a trade, and they have finally done so. Let’s take a closer look at the trade package between the White Sox and the New York Mets and discuss what this means for the White Sox going forward.
The Chicago White Sox traded away Luis Robert Jr. for 2 prospects
The White Sox have finally pulled the trigger on a long-rumored trade as they traded away center fielder Luis Robert Jr. The trade sees him going to the Mets in exchange for infielder Luisangel Acuna and right-handed pitcher Truman Pauley, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Robert Jr. is being paid $20 million this season and has a club option for the same amount in 2027 before becoming a free agent.
Acuna is projected to be Chicago’s center fielder and has positional flexibility, playing second base, third base, and center field in his young career. He has appeared in 109 games and has a .640 OPS with three home runs, 14 RBI, 36 runs scored, and 16 stolen bases on 18 attempts. In the field, Acuna has been excellent, only committing three errors in 580.0 innings defensively. Pauley is a Single-A pitcher who was drafted in the 12th round of the 2025 MLB Draft. He made three starts with the St. Lucie Mets last season and was 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP in 4.1 innings.
This is clearly the White Sox shedding Robert Jr’s salary and getting some young talent in return. This seemingly is not a terrible trade for Chicago, but takes away arguably their most well-known player. This will open up a chance for Everson Pereira to get some action and compete with Acuna for the starting center field spot. This young core of Chase Meidroth, Kyle Teel, Colson Montgomery, and Brooks Baldwin now adds another young player to the mix. It will be intriguing to see how the White Sox look with so much young talent.
