Chicago Bears veteran warns team could see mass exodus in free agency
The Chicago Bears exceeded expectations in head coach Ben Johnson’s first season with the team.

The Bears won the NFC North and their first playoff game since 2010 by beating their rival, the Green Bay Packers, in the wild-card round. Their luck ran out Sunday in a 20-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in overtime.
With quarterback Caleb Williams set to enter the third season of his rookie contract, Chicago needs to be thinking about going all-in for a Super Bowl in the next two seasons. The Bears overcame challenges with a defensive roster that was missing core pieces.
However, Chicago needs to be aggressive to add talent in the offseason if they want to maximize Williams’ rookie contract deal.
Veteran safety Kevin Byard III sent a warning to the front office before free agency starts. When telling reporters he would ideally like to return to Chicago in 2026, Byard suggested the Bears’ recent success could make other league teams try to nab players from the roster, hoping to fuel their own postseason runs.
“With the success that we all had this season as a team, I think a lot of guys on this team are going to be coveted around this league, honestly,” Byard said, via Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “And I think the same way the organization is always going to do what’s best for the team, I think I owe that to my family as well.”

Byard, 32, earned a Pro Bowl nomination and All-Pro honors for his play in the regular season. If the Bears don’t value him, Byard said he’ll be motivated for another team.
“I want to be able to play at a higher level and all that good stuff,” Byard said, “but what motivates me and what drives that is to want to win and try to be the best person, to be the best player, leader, teammate that I could possibly be for this organization — or any organization.”
Turnover is a part of the process for every team in the offseason. Johnson told reporters on Sunday night that he knew in the locker room after the game that all of the guys in the room wouldn’t be there in Week 1 of the 2026 season.
The key for the Bears is to choose the right players to keep. Byard is one of those players.
