CUP OF JOE: “If Harbaugh was fired…”

I have to tell you, I’m so tired of hearing people say things like, “If the Ravens fire John Harbaugh, he’ll get a job the next day.”

So what? Good for John! If Harbaugh and the Ravens do part ways, and they should (but they won’t), I’d wish John all the success in the world until the day he returns to The Bank and takes on the Ravens.

John is a good man; a God-fearing man whose faith propels his life. He has his shit together. But after 18 seasons, his message is stale and it could be argued that his coaching philosophies, steeped in the obsolete ideology of his 86-year-old dad whose coaching career is best described as slightly above average, is no longer a fit for the modern NFL.

If this is in reference to John. Let me say this: There are teams who wish, wish, they could have the foundation, culture and consistency that John Harbaugh has built in Baltimore. And then there’s the sector of analysts and fans who might chime in with, “If the Ravens let Harbaugh go, who will they get?”

Please…

I can remember a conversation with Eric DeCosta back during the winter of 2008 when he was the Director of College Scouting. Jason Garrett had just shot the Ravens down in flames, turning his nose up the open head coaching position in Baltimore that was offered to him. Instead, he opted to stay in Dallas where he eventually became the Cowboys head coach sans the “interim” status in 2011. At the time, I asked Eric why they were messing around interviewing unestablished coaches like Brian Shottenheimer and John Harbaugh. I’ll never forget his response.

“Don’t quit on Harbaugh. He’s really interviewing well.”

The point is, back in 2008, few knew who Harbaugh other than Jim’s brother and Andy Reid. And while you might feel disdain towards John at the moment, there’s no denying that his tenure has been successful albeit underachieving. It was a good hire and one that came out of nowhere. Who’s to say that the Ravens can’t uncover another relative unknown who can produce results as a skipper?

There’s an old saying, “You can’t discover new oceans until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
