The Notre Dame Fighting Irish had an excellent season that ended in heartbreak as their 10-2 record was not enough to make the 2025 College Football Playoff. The team was able to rattle off a 10-game winning streak after starting 0-2, but the selection committee did not believe their resume was enough to make one of the seven at-large spots. This sparked some controversy, but one legendary sports figure thinks the program would have continued winning and been crowned the national champions. Let’s take a closer look at what he said.

ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale would post on Twitter how he believes that, after watching some of the College Football Playoff games, Notre Dame would have won the national championship if they made the tournament.
“The more I watch these football playoff games I believe the @NDFootball team thet latter part of the season which kept getting better with each game would have been the NATIONAL CHAMPS – yes @Marcus_Freeman1 you would have PROUDLY been holding the championship trophy.”
The Fighting Irish were projected to be in the College Football Playoff for a majority of the regular season, before being flipped with the Miami Hurricanes for the final at-large bid. As a protest, the program would decline an invitation to play in any bowl games and continue its focus on making the College Football Playoff in 2026.
Even with the rumors regarding coach Marcus Freeman exploring his options, he remained in South Bend with the goal of winning the national championship. It would be interesting to project how Notre Dame would have done if they were able to compete in the College Football Playoff, but this should be used as motivation for the program next season.
