Former Chicago Bears coach plans to steal some stuff from Ben Johnson
It didn’t go so well the last time a Chicago Bears coach left to become an offensive assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Former Bears head coach Matt Nagy became a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach for the Chiefs in 2022. He worked his way up to becoming an offensive coordinator in 2023 after Eric Bieniemy Jr. became the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.
Both Bieniemy and Nagy have aspirations of becoming head coaches in the league, but have struggled under head coach Andy Reid and outside of the Chiefs organization. Nagy is looking for an offensive coordinator job after being unable to land a head coaching gig this offseason.
Bieniemy has come full circle after his attempts with the Commanders and UCLA.
After boosting the Bears running backs D’Andre Swift and rookie Kyle Monangai in 2025, he’s now the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs.
Per Nate Taylor of ESPN, Bieniemy told reports on Wednesday that it was a difficult decision for him to leave the Bears and head coach Ben Johnson’s staff.
Via Taylor:
“Eric Bieniemy on returning to the Chiefs: ‘It was a real, real tough decision (to leave the Bears). … More than anything, I’m fired up for this opportunity.’ Bieniemy made it clear returning to the Chiefs — with Andy Reid & Patrick Mahomes — felt like returning home.”

Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle has been a candidate for several NFL teams looking for a new play caller. It would have been interesting to see if Johnson had considered Bieniemy for the job if Doyle left.
Bieniemy was known as a tone setter in practice last season.
Bieniemy wants to set the tone with the running game in Kansas City in 2026. The Chiefs ranked 25th in the league for rushing last season with 1,812 yards and 15 touchdowns.
“We’re going to make sure we can do the things we can do best. Have I been exposed to a number of run schemes? Yes. We need to find what we do best.”
It appears Bieniemy plans to adopt some schemes from Johnson for the Chiefs.
“We’re going to make sure we can do the things we can do best,” Bieniemy said. “Have I been exposed to a number of run schemes? Yes. We need to find what we do best.”
Without Bieniemy, the Bears have their own questions about the running back room.
