Kevin Byard at Chicago Bears training camp

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for their NFC Divisional matchup this weekend, but there is some discussion regarding what they will do during the offseason. There is a good amount of impactful players on the roster who are going to be free agents after their season ends, so general manager Ryan Poles has some intriguing decisions to make. Let’s take a closer look at what one publication believes is the key player they need to keep around for next season and possibly beyond.

Pro Football Focus’s Bradley Locker posted an article discussing each team’s upcoming free agent that they cannot afford to lose. For Chicago, he chose safety Kevin Byard, and below is the snippet he wrote discussing the situation:

The Bears’ 2025 campaign has been a bit of a fairytale, with the team reaching the divisional round in Ben Johnson’s inaugural season. Although Chicago’s defense is still suboptimal, keeping Byard would go a long way toward improving the unit. Byard’s 72.9 PFF overall grade this season ranks 12th among qualified safeties, and his PFF run-defense and PFF coverage grades both place him at least 18th at the position. Moreover, since joining Chicago before the 2024 season, Byard is 13th in PFF overall grade among qualifiers (76.4). Paying a 32-year-old safety carries innate risks, but Byard also owns the highest PFF overall grade among Chicago defenders this year. Keeping his run-defense and coverage instincts in the team’s secondary would continue to bolster the defensive foundation.”

Byard has been able to be a solid contributor for the Bears this season as during the regular season he recorded 93 total tackles (61 solo, 32 assisted) with seven interceptions and eight pass deflections. He has been with the team since the 2024 season, so while not being with the team long, Byard has made an impact since joining Chicago. Elijah Hicks is the backup free safety currently on the roster and is also a free agent this offseason, so it will be intriguing to see how the front office views Byard heading into the offseason.
