RSR Board Buzz: Talking Head Coach Candidates!
It’s easily the most exciting offseason in years for Ravens Flock, and as such the murder over at the RSR message board is in full fever mode. Let’s see what the hottest topics are…
Who Does Ravens24x7 Desire as the New Ravens HC & Staff?
mmi16 (7K posts) posed the obvious question two weeks ago, and we’re up to 10 pages of responses. Here are a few…

As of right now, this is my order:
HC Flores, OC McDaniel
HC Flores, OC Scheelhaase
HC Saleh, OC McDaniel.

Impossible for me to really evaluate most of the candidates because their resumes are as DCs or OCs and that’s not at all what I am looking for.
I’d be looking for someone who has the communication and player-connection skills and also a strong vision. I think Harbaugh had the former but lost his way with the latter. The Ravens lost their identity, I will definitely say that.
On defense they had some sense of identify under Macdonald (positionless players who could attack relentlessly from anywhere on the field). That definitely eroded under Orr, although I think they have a good core that they could revive it if they wanted to.
On offense, I don’t know what happened but they clearly lost their identity under Monken. I don’t know what the hell happened to the 24 Ravens offense that forced defense to choose between defending Henry from running it down their throats or Lamar pulling the ball and beating you with a dual threat. Injuries certainly seemed to curtail his willingness to run, or Monken’s willingness to call it. But they completely lost any identity. Not just play calling. Other than re-signing key contributors (Stanley, Hopkins, Ricard, Wallace) the other signings on offense were head scratchers. Cooper Rush…Ben Cleveland… Joseph Noteboom. Hard to what identity on offense supported these moves.
Anyway, long way of saying I don’t necessarily want them to focus on signing a certain OC, but I do want the next HC to hire a staff that establishes a strong identity on both sides of the ball that they consistently build around for years to come.
RaveninWoodlawn (29K posts) started a thread on the Rams’ passing game coordinator, who was among the Ravens’ first group of interviews.
This young man seems to be the next big name that’s coming up the ranks. His age (35) and relatively lack of experience I think are going to have him get passed up this round, but keep this name in mind…he’s a guy that every coach that’s worked with him has been overly impressive.
McVay absolutely loves him. I think it says a lot that he’s the offensive name coming up from the Rams for HC vacancies and not LaFluer.
GOTA (54K posts) chimes in.
One thing I love about the Rams is how they change offensives sets almost effortlessly. They made a switch during the year from mostly a 11 formation team to a 13 formation team. That 3 wide receivers to 3 tight ends. Is that Sheelhasse making that call? No I’m sure it’s McVay but Scheelhaase is the guy who has to make sure the passing game works for both and it sure does. This guy clearly knows how to make things happen at least in his current role. Is he ready for the next level the same way Ben Johnson in Detroit was? That I don’t know but I am very happy to see him on our interview list. I do think this could be a Chris Shula HC Nathan Scheelhaase OC type hire if it happens and I’d be good with that combo.
Big news this morning, as another extremely attractive job with an MVP QB in his prime has opened up. The Buffalo Bills fired Sean McDermott following another divisional round loss. The crew chimes in…

It’s important the Ravens act now and lock up the head coaching candidate they prefer. Don’t lost out because the Bills are now looking for a head coach who can lead Josh Allen to a Super Bowl.
GreatWhiteNorthRaven (31K posts)
The Ravens don’t strike me as an organization that would react to another job opening.
Some will call that hubris, but I think they’re going to feel their reputation still makes them the top job.
Going to be interesting.
