This Chicago Bears player is considered the team’s most likely cap casualty for 2026 offseason
The Chicago Bears had an excellent season, but are going to need to make some tough decisions this offseason. With the Bears currently over the 2026 salary cap, they will need to make decisions on how to effectively get below the cap number. There are a number of ways they can do it, but the easiest option is to cut players who are being paid more than their production allows. Let’s take a closer look at who one outlet believes can be released this offseason to save some money for the Bears.
Bleacher Report ranks Cole Kmet as the Bears’ top cap casualty this offseason

Bleacher Report posted an article discussing each team’s most likely cap casualty this offseason, and the Bears had tight end Cole Kmet listed. Below is what they listed as the reasoning behind why they believe this to be the case:
“The Chicago Bears are going to have to perform a bit of a tightrope act this offseason. After having a breakthrough campaign they don’t want to shake up the core too much, but they have work to do to be cap compliant by the start of the new league year in March.
“That dynamic could make Kmet a logical cap casualty. Colston Loveland was clearly the team’s top tight end and led the team in receiving. The Bears are set to pay Kmet $11.6 million this season which is a lot to pay for a second tight end.”
Kmet has been part of the Bears since he was drafted in 2020. Last season, he finished with 30 receptions on 48 targets for 347 yards (11.6 yards per catch) and a pair of touchdowns. If Chicago were to make him a pre-June 1 cut, the team would save $8.4 million. With the ability to have Loveland producing at the level he did this season, paying that much for a second tight end feels like the front office can allocate the money better elsewhere.
According to Over The Cap, the Bears are currently more than $17.6 million above the 2026 salary cap. There will be some decisions that the team will have to make, and likely some contracts getting restructured to help alleviate the cap hit, but it will be intriguing to see which players are released to save money.
