Chicago Bears and Ryan Poles must prioritize filling major need on defense

Ryan Poles, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears‘ defense which thrived on creating turnovers this past season could be about to see some major personnel turnover this offseason.

General manager Ryan Poles and the Bears expended significant resources, both during free agency and throughout the NFL Draft last spring, upgrading the talent around former No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Caleb Williams, on offense, but might be about to replicate that strategy to fortify the defense.

Several of the Bears’ top veteran playmakers in the secondary are set to become free agents, which could dictate how the team allocates its resources, but there is one pressing need that could unlock coordinator Dennis Allen’s unit’s full potential.

Chicago Bears urged to upgrade defensive line

One area that appears to be a top need for the Bears to upgrade this offseason is along the defensive line.

NFL Media analyst Kevin Patra suggests in addition to Shemar Turner returning, Poles and the Bears should make adding quality depth to the defensive line should be Poles’ and Chicago’s top priority.

“With their top safeties hitting free agency, that’s a position Ryan Poles will also deal with,” Patra points out for NFL Media. “But bulking up the interior of the D-line is a must this year after the Bears got pushed around for stretches in 2025. Chicago allowed 134.5 rush yards per game and a 44% success rate on carries, both in the bottom 10. Grady JarrettGervon Dexter and Andrew Billings (a free agent) all struggled to plug gaps. Getting Shemar Turner (torn ACL) back will help, but adding beef inside is necessary for the defense to improve in 2026.”

Winning up front in the trenches, both against the run, and generating consistent pressure on the quarterback is paramount to success for a defense, and the Bears are going to need to be much more consistently dominant along the line of scrimmage in 2026 if Chicago is going to take the next step towards a Super Bowl.
