Chicago Cubs: Dansby Swanson gets 100% real on offensive struggles since joining team

Chicago Cubs, Dansby Swanson

Back in December of 2022, the Chicago Cubs signed free agent shortstop Dansby Swanson to a massive seven-year $177 million contract. At that time, he was already a one-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner. Additionally, he had won a World Series with the Atlanta Braves in 2021.

Prior to signing with the Cubs, Swanson enjoyed a 2022 season that saw him hit .277/.329/.447 with 25 home runs and 96 RBI. He also played all 162 games that season.

In seven seasons with Atlanta, Swanson hit .255/.321/.417 with 102 home runs and 411 RBI. Unfortunately, in the three seasons since, Swanson has seen his batting line dip.

In three seasons with Chicago, Swanson has a slash line of .243/.313/.407, which is below his line with Atlanta referenced above. And while he averages over 20 home runs a season and has since made another All-Star team and won another Gold Glove, it is clear that he is still searching for something at the plate.

Last season, Swanson struck out 168 times in 159 games, the second-highest strikeout total of his career. Additionally, he only walked 47 times, the lowest total he has had as a member of the Cubs.

Recently, Swanson spoke to reporters about his off-season and what he is doing to get back on track:

“I feel like I haven’t been what I’ve wanted to be over the last few years. The best thing I could do was intentionally change things, whether that was how I was training or some of the things in the cage. Pushing myself to get better.”

As one can see, Swanson is not happy with his offensive performance over the last several seasons. This winter, he has been working on different things in an attempt to regain the consistency he enjoyed during his time with the Braves.

In order to do that, though, the biggest thing he will need to fix is his pitch selection. If Swanson can cut down on his strikeouts and draw more walks, he could be one of the most dangerous hitters in the league.
