Cubs add longtime Reds catcher on MiLB deal amid starters visa issues
Chicago Cubs players have reported to came to begin spring training, well almost all of them. Both Moisés Ballesteros and Christian Bethancourt have been delayed due to visa issues, with their expected arrival not being until the end of the month.
This complication puts the organization thin on catchers, which including during live exhibition games that are slated to begin on Friday, February 20. Additionally, Ballesteros and Bethancourt will be behind everyone in terms of their preparation for the upcoming season.
Being down a pair of catchers, the Cubs unofficially have added another catcher on a minor league deal. Per Greg Huss, Eric Yang has joined the organization after previously spending his entire career in the Cincinnati Reds system.
The Cubs have signed catcher Eric Yang to a minor league deal.
Yang, a 7th round pick in the 2019 draft, has 1 Major League plate appearance under his belt and spent 6 seasons in the Reds farm system. He’ll serve as much-needed catching depth in Triple-A Iowa.

Chicago Cubs add longtime Cincinnati Reds catcher Eric Yang on MiLB deal
Yang, a former seventh-round pick by the Reds, has spent the past seven seasons in the organization. He recorded just one big-league at-bat in 2024 and has otherwise logged significant time at the upper levels of the minors. Throughout his career, he owns a .225/.348/.314 slash line, but his biggest asset comes behind the dish via his defensive abilities.
At 27, turning 28 soon, he’ll likely fill a similar minor league depth role with the Cubs, serving as experienced catching insurance at the upper levels. Unless ongoing visa complications or injuries create an unexpected opportunity at the major league level, his primary value will come from providing stability and organizational depth behind the plate.
