Bears could swing much cheaper trade amid Maxx Crosby drama
It appeared that the Maxx Crosby situation had been settled when the Las Vegas Raiders agreed to trade the star defensive end to the Baltimore Ravens, effectively ending the Chicago Bears‘ chances of landing him.
However, the Ravens have since backed out of the trade, which has re-opened the door for the Bears to swoop in and snatch Crosby.
But is it really advisable for Chicago to do that at this point? The Bears were apparently willing to surrender a pair of first-round picks to bag Crosby, but with concerns emerging regarding Crosby’s knee, the Raiders have probably lost some leverage (even if they are maintaining their asking price for now).
There are certainly other viable pass-rushing targets available for Chicago, both via free agency and trade. And of course, the Bears could always take their chances in the NFL Draft, which is slated to be rather deep at edge rusher.
One possibility for Chicago? New York Giants star Kayvon Thibodeaux.
The Chicago Bears should try to trade for Kayvon Thibodeaux
Thibodeaux has been floated as an option for the Bears since the end of the season, and it still makes perfect sense.
Yes, the 25-year-old is coming off of a rough year in which he logged just 2.5 sacks in 10 games, but he has displayed his potential in the past. During his second NFL season in 2023, for example, Thibodeaux racked up 50 tackles, 11.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.
The Giants drafted Abdul Carter last spring and also have Brian Burns on the roster, so with Thibodeaux entering the final year of his deal, it doesn’t make much sense for them to keep him. Surely, New York would be willing to part with Thibodeaux in exchange for a Day 2 pick, and Chicago might be willing to pay that price.
The Bears could send the 89th overall pick to the Giants in exchange for Thibodeaux, which would give Chicago a very talented player alongside of Montez Sweat at a much more affordable price than Crosby.
Obviously, going from Crosby to Thibodeaux is a pretty steep dropoff, but it’s not like Thibodeaux is a bum.
The Bears should absolutely be on the phone with Big Blue trying to complete a deal here.
