Chicago Bears lose Kevin Byard to AFC Super Bowl contender
The Chicago Bears are going to be without one of their top defenders this season. After a year where the defense finished in first place in takeaways, one of the contributors is going elsewhere. It will be interesting to see how the Bears plan on replacing his production, but let’s take a closer look at what happened.
Kevin Byard claims it was down to the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that former Bears safety Kevin Byard III is signing with the New England Patriots. The deal is for one year and is worth $9 million, not too large of a salary cap hit. NFL insider Josina Anderson is providing a bit of supplemental information about the contract. While on the phone with Byard, he revealed the two teams it was down to in free agency:
“It was either Bears or the Patriots, and you know I have relationship with Coach Vrabes; and New England it is…”
Byard had a strong season with the Bears last year as he was named a first-team All-Pro. He would play in all 17 games and recorded 93 total tackles (61 solo, 32 assisted) with four tackles for loss, eight pass deflections, and a NFL-leading seven interceptions. He spent the previous two seasons with the Bears, helping out the secondary. Chicago seemingly signed his replacement as they have agreed to terms with Seattle Seahawks safety Coby Bryant.
Byard is entering his age-33 season, so it could have been as simple as the front office wanting to get younger at the position more than the player himself. The Bears struggled on the defensive side of the ball, ranking 23rd in the league with 24.4 points allowed per game. Chicago is going to look a lot different defensively, so it will be intriguing to see how they perform.
