Bleacher Report considers this Chicago Bears player a cut candidate right now
The Chicago Bears are in a position where they may need to cut a player before the season starts. The cap situation after signing some free agents put the team behind the eight-ball, as they need more cap space to add more players. Whether it be to add more free agents or to be able to sign draft picks, the Bears need to find ways to create cap space. One outlet discussed some of the top cut candidates, so let’s see which Chicago player made that list.
The Chicago Bears can cut tight end Cole Kmet this offseason
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox wrote an article discussing the most notable cut candidates in football. One name that popped up was tight end Cole Kmet. Below is a snippet of what Knox wrote about why Kmet could be released this offseason:
“The Chicago Bears would probably prefer to trade Cole Kmet or restructure his contract instead of releasing him outright. The 27-year-old has been a very reliable contributor for Chicago, though rookie Colston Loveland replace him as TE1 in 2025… If the Bears can’t work out a restructure or find a trade partner for Kmet, they can save $9 million by releasing him after June 1. If Chicago can add some depth behind Loveland over draft weekend, releasing Kmet would make a good amount of financial sense.”
With the emergence of Loveland last season, the Bears do not need a second tight end getting paid significant money. Saving $9 million on the cap is significant, especially after Chicago has less than $250,000 in available cap space. If the Bears are able to get something for Kmet, they would prefer it, but that may not be the case. They could have to eat some of Kmet’s salary, so general manager Ryan Poles needs to look at all available options. It will be intriguing to see what the Bears decide to do with Kmet this offseason.
