Chicago Bears get great news from NFL ahead of free agency beginning
The NFL released the updated salary cap ahead of the 2026 league-year beginning, and free agency getting underway next month, and it couldn’t possibly be better news for the Chicago Bears.
According to the league’s release, the salary cap is rising to $301.2 million for each team, which represents a $22 million total increase from where it was projected to be, previously.
How much cap space do the Chicago Bears now have?
For general manager Ryan Poles and the Chicago Bears, this couldn’t be better news, coming at a better time.
After Friday’s update, the Bears are currently projected to have approximately $68,996 in cap space, a marked improvement from previously sitting upwards of $5.3 million over the cap.
While Poles and the Bears still have some work to do to create the kind of spending flexibility necessary to compete for some of the top free agents this offseason and to have on hand for Chicago’s incoming draft class, the front office won’t be forced into any draconian cuts simply to get cap compliant before free agency kicks off.
The league-wide cap spike has effectively handed the Bears a clean slate, setting the stage for a high-stakes free agency period where they actually finally play offense with their finances in the weeks ahead
