Chicago White Sox inform 2 players they won’t make Opening Day roster

Jarred Kelenic, Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox are continuing to trim their Spring Training roster ahead of Opening Day. With just three Spring Training games remaining, the organization is making the final decisions on who will be on the 26-man roster. After Thursday’s Spring Training game against the Los Angeles Angels, the team made the decision on two more players. Let’s take a closer look at who learned their fate and what it means for Chicago’s roster going forward.

Jarred Kelenic and Drew Romo are not making the Chicago White Sox Opening Day roster

The White Sox have made a decision on two more players’ futures with the MLB team. Chicago said that both outfielder Jarred Kelenic and catcher Drew Romo will not make the Opening Day roster. However, they are going to remain with the major league camp through the final game on Monday afternoon. Neither player has been released, which means they will likely begin the season at Triple-A. This also means that Everson Pereira and Derek Hill likely will make the Opening Day roster, but that is not confirmed as of this writing.

Kelenic struggled a bit at the plate as he went 7 for 35 (.200) with two home runs and five RBI. He was a non-roster invitee to Spring Training when he signed his contract. Romo had a lot more success offensively this spring, going 6 for 17 (.353) with five RBI and a 4:3 walk-to-strikeout ratio. There was seemingly a chance for him to make the roster after the Kyle Teel injury, but instead, the team seemingly decided to go with Edgar Quero and Korey Lee as the two catchers on the roster.

It will be interesting to see if any other team is going to call looking to acquire either player for their roster. It should not take too long before either player finds his way into an MLB lineup.
