Chicago White Sox make major decision on Sean Newcomb for 2026 season
The Chicago White Sox have a lot of question marks that they are filling during Spring Training. One of them is which pitchers are going to be in the starting rotation and which are going to be bullpen options. Figuring out roles for manager Will Venable is going to be critical for the season. It appears one has been made about one possible starting pitcher. Let’s take a closer look at which pitcher it is and what the decision was.
The Chicago White Sox will have Sean Newcomb come out of the bullpen
Chicago has made a decision on what role pitcher Sean Newcomb will be starting the season as. Venable made the decision to have Newcomb come out of the bullpen to begin the season. At this point, outside of Shane Smith starting on Opening Day, the rotation is not set. Back in December, Newcomb signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the White Sox.
He pitched a majority of last season out of the bullpen for the Boston Red Sox and Athletics. In 48 combined games (five starts), he went 2-4 with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP in 92.1 innings. Newcomb would also tally a pair of saves, proving he could be pitching in the back-end of games as well.
He has a six-pitch arsenal (fastball, slurve, sinker, cutter, changeup, curveball) that will keep the opposing batter off-balanced. Newcomb has made four appearances so far in Spring Training with a pair of starts. He has allowed eight runs (six earned) in 11.0 innings thus far. There have been no other decisions made outside of Newcomb, so it will be interesting to see how the White Sox starting rotation looks this season.
