Chicago White Sox send down Jonathan Cannon ahead of 2026 Opening Day
The Chicago White Sox are in a position where they need to figure out who is breaking camp with the team. With less than two weeks before Opening Day, difficult roster decisions are going to be made. The team had a position battle going on for spots in their starting rotation, but today they have one less pitcher competing for it. The Chicago White Sox sent down Jonathan Cannon to Triple-A team
The White Sox officially announced they are sending down Jonathan Cannon to Triple-A Charlotte to begin the 2026 season. Manager Will Venables would later announce the starting rotation of being:
- Shane Smith
- Sean Burke
- Anthony Kay
- Davis Martin
- Erick Fedde
Cannon was competing for the final spot in the starting rotation, but the 25-year-old missed the cut. He had a decent Spring Training as he was 1-0 with a 4.09 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP over 11.0 innings. However, the team has decided to let him get some more seasoning in Triple-A Charlotte before getting called back up.
Cannon has struggled throughout his young career in the majors as he has pitched in 45 games (38 starts) and was 9-20 with a 5.09 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP in 228.0 innings. His control has been solid as he has a 78:177 walk-to-strikeout ratio throughout his career as well. Chicago is likely to call him up at some point as he continues to develop on the mound.
The White Sox are high on him being a starting pitcher in the majors in the future, but allowing him to start the season in Triple-A lessens expectations. Fedde is a good veteran arm, but this allows Cannon the ability to improve his stuff with less pressure. It will be intriguing to see how he does in the minors.
