DeCosta, Ravens Slandered by Fans & Media
The Ravens brain trust met as they usually do at owner Steve Bisicotti’s estate in Jupiter, Florida a week or so ago. It’s there where the team’s decision makers put the finishing touches on the offseason plan – an important one that kicks off the Jesse Minter era.
Dating back to the Bisciotti presser intended to explain the rationale behind the John Harbaugh firing, we all observed and anxious owner who saw that his team had grown stale, complacent – a team that clearly earned the title of underachievers. 2026 was going to be the season that the complacency changed. This would be the season that represented an organizational awakening. And to sound the alarm of the newly energized franchise, the Ravens took a massive swing to acquire Maxx Crosby.
There isn’t another player on the planet more pivotal than Crosby for the Ravens. NONE. All the blown 4th quarter leads due to an anemic pass rush would be averted moving forward. Despite the massive draft capital foregone, the Ravens acquired the one player who could affect games in so many ways on defense, an effect that could spill over to the offense and the way Minter could manage games during the coming season.
Game on!
Or so we thought.
Then came the news that the Ravens were going to pull the plug on the trade. Crosby in purple and black isn’t going to happen. And now the speculation as to why is running rampant. The Ravens claimed that Crosby flunked their physical. Others are suspicious.
It was widely known that Crosby is recovering from a knee surgery to his meniscus. So, it stands to reason that the Ravens had to have some trust in the medical opinions of the Raiders regarding Crosby’s knee until they had their doctors examine the 5-time Pro Bowler. From the jump, the deal carried the condition, “pending physical” – a physical that eventually spelled doom for the trade.

Why didn’t the Ravens send their doctors to Crosby earlier? Why not have him come to Baltimore sooner? If they had done so, maybe the venomous backlash could have been avoided.
Instead, the Ravens, particularly Eric DeCosta, find themselves uncomfortably in the eye of a media shitstorm. They are being unfairly painted as villains, scumbags and the custodians of a slimeball organization.
In any business, whether it be that of an NFL GM or the operator of a food truck, success is found by exploring opportunities and once identified, capitalizing upon them. If the optimal plan presents untenable obstacles, you seize the second opportunity, more commonly referred to as Plan B. The only thing DeCosta did was to responsibly shift to Plan B, Trey Hendrickson.
Deals are made in the NFL all the time that are qualified with, “pending physical”. That is a standard and universally understood practice. In the case of Maxx Crosby, the term took on a slightly different meaning. It was widely understood that Crosby is recovering from surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee. So, the “physical” was going to take on an altered context since there was no way he would straight up pass a physical. The Ravens needed to examine the knee to determine the extent of the damage. What they found was cause for concern. The longevity of Crosby’s career came into question. Could he perform at an elite level for the balance of the contract they would inherit in the trade that stretched through 2029.
The Ravens concluded that he could not and therefore the price (two first-round picks) was cost prohibitive. DeCosta pivoted to Plan B, as he should have.
Critics screamed that the Ravens are disingenuous. They’ve said the Ravens backed out of the deal due to buyer’s remorse. Accusations of being underhanded for working a back door deal with Hendrickson are being throw at DeCosta like Pacman Jones hurls cash at the stage of a gentlemen’s club.
What would you have done?
Let’s say you agree to buy a used car for a specified price pending inspection. If your mechanic tells you that the transmission needs to be replaced, do you still buy the car? More than likely, you pass on the deal, or you go back to the seller and ask for a reduced price. If you can’t agree on a price you move on.
This is exactly what happened during the Crosby to the Ravens trade. Any responsible GM would do the same. In the case of the Ravens GM, he knew, you knew, we all knew that the Ravens HAD TO improve their pass rush. It was the single biggest deficiency of the 2025 Ravens and it is of vital importance to the way the Jesse Minter defense operates.
So, if DeCosta had concerns about Crosby’s knee, he had to have a backup plan ready if the doctors couldn’t offer their seal of approval on Maxx’ meniscus. And therefore, DeCosta remained in touch with Henderickson’s agent. A custodian of the franchise, aka the GM, is paid to do such things. For DeCosta not do these things is at best a failure to carry out his fiduciary responsibilities and at worst, it represents managerial malpractice. A strong GM does what the did. A weak GM would have done nothing to reverse the trade and roll the dice on his team’s financial future.
“I’ve got a responsibility – to the Ravens, to this community, to our fans and to [owner] Steve Bisciotti to do what we think is best for the club. And that’s what we always try to do. Every decision we make is based on this idea, ‘Is this the best thing for the Ravens?’ [It’s] very, very challenging. Again, I understand how people might – maybe from afar – would feel that way, but nobody is more upset about this than me. I am gutted by it, actually. And so, [this is] a big regret for me. But, we will move on as a football team. And I think there are many, many opportunities for us to grow as a team, to become a better team, to build a roster and to be the team that we want to be.” ~ Eric DeCosta during yesterday’s impromptu press conference.
Also during Wednesday’s presser, DeCosta provided a stunning revelation about his communication with Hendrickson’s handlers.
“In terms of Trey [Hendrickson], I think we came to a point probably after we lost Tyler [Linderbaum], where, as we’re trying to find the best way for us to get better as a football team, Trey kind of made a lot of sense as a possible guy to look at. So, we started some discussions with him and his agent, thinking that potentially we’d have two pass rushers on the defensive line on both sides of the line. Again, I think it was disappointing to us and probably in a way, potentially disappointing probably to Trey as well.”
For the Ravens to agree in principle to a trade that cost them two first-round draft picks was an example of an organization thinking outside the box – stepping outside of their comfort zone. For the same team to do that while making a free agent splash in the form of Hendrickson AT THE SAME TIME seems like a team that is really going all in. Could you imagine a Ravens defense with Crosby, Hendrickson and a returning Nnamdi Madubuike?
Me neither. But we can all ponder the possibilities.
Many have accused DeCosta of conjuring up the Crosby/Hendrickson book end dream to justify how quickly they moved on to the former Bengal, claiming that there’s no way the Ravens would invest so much money at edge rusher. I’d have to agree, that seems like a real reach, but Hendrickson seems to concur.
“Trey Hendrickson said that his understanding was when he was thinking of going to Baltimore it was to team up with Maxx Crosby..
That was his initial impression but he’s happy to get his deal done” ~ @AdamSchefter #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/jk9rWLLiBF

At the end of the day, the circumstances that brought us to this point aren’t material. During the weeks and months to come, time will heal any wounds. No one will care. Bengals fans and Raiders fans will bellyache, but that too is inconsequential. They’ve been whining for years about everything, so what’s the difference? The only thing that changes is the target of their collective insecurity.
And if you think for a second that suddenly DeCosta’s reputation is sullied and other GMs won’t do business with him because of this, that’s nothing more than excrement from a male bovine. Every other GM would do the same thing given the medicals. THE SAME EXACT THING! If a GM thinks the Ravens can help his team, DeCosta’s phone will still ring.
Yet the vitriol from other NFL fans will continue. The piling on during the last 36 hours has been staggering.
Full disclosure…I find it quite amusing and I’m having a little fun with it.
I hope you enjoy these tweets, and that you keep the faith in this offseason for the Ravens. I think it’s going to be special.
What part of “trade pending physical” is too complicated for you?

Vorhees was a seventh round flyer! Ojabo was projected as a first round pick so the ravens took a chance with a second round pick. These clearly aren’t comparable situations. Nice try!

If those 31 teams have a need that they think the Ravens can fill, DeCosta’s phone will ring. Stop the silly high school cheerleader bully talk.
— Lombardi Party of One (@RSRLombardi) March 11, 2026
So the Ravens consulted with several doctors. That suggests that they were looking for one to put a seal of approval on the trade. No doc would step up. If doc after doc
the knee, you formulate Plan B. If that’s scumbag business, I’m all for it!

You need to check the facts on that tanked deal or cease with the revisionist history to suit your narrative.

The Eagles traded a 2026 6th-rd pick to the Ravens for Alexander and a 2027 7th-round pick Alexander took an Eagles physical before the trade was completed. What you posted was slimier than anything the Ravens have done.

First, he’s showing respect to the player and secondly there are these things called HIPAA laws in case you don’t know… Look them up

Stop with the BS or worse, lies to suit your narrative! The Eagles traded a 2026 6th-rd pick to the Ravens for Alexander and a 2027 7th-round pick. Alexander took an Eagles physical before the trade was completed.

The Ravens would never approve the Bengals being removed from the NFL. They are quite happy to have you in the AFCN.

Said the fan who roots for a team that has had 5 general managers since 2019, 15 head coaches since 2002 and hasn’t won a playoff game since January 12, 2003. You better recognize!
