How did Yacksel Rios do vs Team Colombia in World Baseball Classic pool play?
The Chicago Cubs are looking to see how their players are performing in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and thus far, things are pointing in the right direction. Players are looking strong at the beginning of pool play, and that includes players not expected to be on the 26-man roster. Let’s take a look at how one pitcher slated to be in the minor leagues pitched for Team Puerto Rico on Friday.
Chicago Cubs’ reliever Yacksel Ríos pitches a perfect inning in relief for Team Puerto Rico
Rios was able to get on the mound in Team Puerto Rico’s 5-0 win in the opening game of pool play against Team Colombia. In the seventh inning, he would get the call from the bullpen and looked sharp. Rios would get to work as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning, getting a flyout, a groundout, and a strikeout. He would throw 16 pitches (10 strikes), which allows him to be available to pitch on Saturday as well if he is needed.
This is the second time that Rios is pitching in the World Baseball Classic, as he would also come out of the bullpen in the 2023 tournament for Team Puerto Rico. He looked sharp throughout the four games he pitched, throwing 3.2 shutout innings throughout the most recent WBC.
Rios is a veteran pitcher about to enter his age-33 season. He signed with the Cubs to a minor league deal back in January, after pitching with the New York Mets last year. Rios has not pitched in the majors since 2023 with the then-Oakland Athletics, but has been pitching in the minors. Competing for a spot in Chicago’s bullpen, a good World Baseball Classic performance could go a long way. It will be intriguing to see how Ríos is used going forward out of the bullpen and if he can continue with his effectiveness.
