Josh Giddey comments on Jaden Ivey situation with Chicago Bulls
As part of the Chicago Bulls’ trade deadline moves, they were able to acquire guard Jaden Ivey from the Detroit Pistons. It was a three-team deal involving the Minnesota Timberwolves as well. Chicago sent Kevin Huerter to Detroit in the deal and the hope was that they could take a chance on a guard like Ivey coming off his rookie contract.
The former Purdue standout only played four games with the Bulls, dealing with knee issues. While a return was expected to be on the table, the Bulls eventually shut Ivey down for the rest of the season. Then on Monday, following a few days of rants on social media about religion, the Bulls decided to release Ivey after he called the LGBTQ+ community unrighteous.
Ivey posted a message saying ‘‘The world proclaims LGBTQ, right? They proclaim Pride Month and the NBA does too, they show it to the world. They say, ‘Come join us for Pride Month to celebrate unrighteousness.’ ’’
With the Bulls in San Antonio, they made the decision to move on from him releasing a statement as well as having Billy Donovan talk on the matter. The Chicago Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley wrote that it was more than just the recent messages but more so the past month of posts and comments.
Josh Giddey speaks on former teammate Jaden Ivey
Following Monday’s loss to the Spurs, Josh Giddey was asked about what had happened earlier in the day with Ivey. He kept it professional.
‘‘Obviously, the whole thing is kind of unfortunate in a way,” Giddey said. “I hope he gets the help he needs, whatever he’s going through or not going through. I do really hope he gets help. It’s not going to be with the Bulls anymore, but wherever it is, I hope he gets it.’’
Social media has gone back and forth on the matter with people sharing their opinion. But it’s clear that his teammates and others want him to get the help that he needs.
