What the Chicago Bears taught us during free agency, per Sports Illustrated

The Chicago Bears are one of the most interesting teams during the free agency period. They have seemingly replaced their entire secondary through free agency as they search for improvements. Chicago also holds a lot of picks, including four of the first 90 selections, so they can continue getting talent. Let’s take a look at what one outlet believes the franchise has told us with their free agent signings.

The Chicago Bears drastically changed their back seven on defense during free agency

The Bears have shown the ability to drastically improve their defense during the free agency period. They were able to add players like linebacker Devin Bush and defensive back Coby Bryant to hopefully get better results on that side of the field. Sports Illustrated’s Eva Geitheim wrote an article discussing what we learned through each team’s offseason thus far. Below is what she wrote for Chicago:

“The Bears defense is in for a new look after their resurgent 2025 campaign. After finishing 29th in yards allowed per game last season, Chicago watched five members of the secondary and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds depart in free agency. With the additions of Coby Bryant, Devin Bush and hopefully a healthier Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon, the Bears defense is in position to climb up the rankings next season.”

The Chicago defense was the weakest aspect of last year’s team, being ranked 23rd with 24.4 points per game allowed. With the team still looking to find some additional pieces on defense, they seemingly will figure it out through the draft. Chicago has less than $2 million

of available cap space right now, so they would need to make more moves to free up cap space if they were to be adding more free agents. If the team can get an improved effort on that side of the ball, they will be a scary team going forward.
