Chicago Bears: Cole Kmet offers up surprising revelation about off-season trade rumors

When the Chicago Bears were knocked out of the NFL Playoffs by the Los Angeles Rams, many expected them to make some significant changes to their roster. While most of these centered on defense, there were a few on the offensive side of the ball. One of them came to fruition when the Bears traded wide receiver DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills.

Another move that many expected Chicago to make was moving on from tight end Cole Kmet. After all, Colston Loveland was a top-ten pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and emerged as the Bears top pass catcher last season. Kmet has seen his role on offense decline in each of the past two seasons and seemed like a prime trade candidate.

However, he never believed he was on the block, and for good reason.

Cole Kmet knew the Chicago Bears were not going to trade him

Speaking to the Chicago media today, Kmet told reporters that, despite the constant trade rumors, he knew he was not going anywhere. This was because Ben Johnson and Ryan Poles made that clear to him:

“Yeah, I mean, look, I felt like I did a lot of the things they asked me to do coming into the year,” Kmet said. “I felt really good about that. Got to my exit meeting with them about right after the game against LA. If you were to ask me right after that, I didn’t think I was going anywhere. Kind of felt that throughout the offseason. Look, Ryan and Ben, I really take them at their word for what they say. They’re very honest guys. They expressed an interest in me being here, staying here and all that.”

Kmet is going to be the second tight end behind Loveland as long as the latter is healthy and in Chicago. That being said, the veteran tight end is well-respected in the locker room and provides yet another option in Johnson’s dynamic offense.

Replacing him would not have been easy.
