Chicago Bears urged to trade for disgruntled 2x All-Pro to bolster their defensive line
The Chicago Bears were one of a handful of NFL teams that attempted to acquire Pro Bowl pass rusher Maxx Crosby via trade earlier this off-season. However, they first lost out in the Crosby sweepstakes to the Baltimore Ravens, who agreed to send two first round picks to the Las Vegas Raiders for him. When the trade fell through, though, the Raiders took Crosby off the market.
That development has left the Bears with trying to bolster their defensive line with lower profile free agents. They have not signed anyone who one might call a real difference maker, and are likely going to address their line in the 2026 NFL Draft.
However, a new ultra-talented lineman just became available on the trading block.
The Chicago Bears are urged to trade for Dexter Lawrence
Two-time Second Team All-Pro Dexter Lawrence was engaged in contract extension talks with the New York Giants, the only team he has ever played for in his seven-year NFL career. However, these talks have not gone the way he wants them to and has demanded a trade.
Kevin Patra of NFL.com believes the Bears should make a call:
“Chicago has a glaring hole in the middle of its defense and has not upgraded the pass rush significantly this offseason. A trade for Lawrence would solve both in one swoop. The veteran’s run defense was down last year, but in Dennis Allen’s defense, his penetrating ability would be an ideal fit.
“After a magical year, in which they were ahead of the curve in Ben Johnson’s first season, this is the type of move a rising team should make to ensure they don’t fall back. Chicago has draft assets, including two second-rounders, to go after Lawrence.
“Cap space is a concern, but teams can make it work if they choose. GM Ryan Poles hasn’t been afraid of making big moves in the past. Another would fit the bill for Chicago.”
As Patra notes, cap space is a real concern in this scenario. Chicago has the least amount of salary cap room in the NFL and is going to have to free up some space anyway in order to sign their 2026 NFL Draft class.
That being said, Patra is right when he says NFL teams can create space if they want to. The Bears certainly have the capability of doing so.
