Chicago Cubs’ Craig Counsell reveals ‘good news’ on Justin Steele

Some Chicago Cubs fans might have been worried on Tuesday afternoon when ESPN’s Jesse Rogers confirmed that starting pitcher Justin Steele suffered a setback.

“He’s shutdown for the time being,” Rogers posted on X. “Steele was recovering from elbow surgery and is eligible to come off the IL around Memorial Day. That could be in jeopardy.”

Steele has been out of the rotation since last April, when he underwent season-ending surgery to repair his left ulnar collateral ligament.

The Cubs, who have seen their pitching staff decimated by injuries in the early season, would be much better off by having Steele return to the rotation sooner rather than later.

During an appearance on The Score’s “Spiegel & Holmes” on Tuesday, Cubs manager Craig Counsell suggested the report of Steele’s setback was a “positive” for the team because it means the pitcher will return at some point this season.

“You have to look at this as a positive,” Counsell said, via Chris Emma. “Like, we didn’t get news that Justin (Steele) is out for the year. He’s got an opportunity to pitch for the Cubs this year and we’re planning on him pitching for the Cubs later this season.

“It’s going to be a little later now than we were planning on it, but it’s still going to happen. So, that’s how I’m looking at it.”

That’s one way to spin it.

With that being said, the Cubs have serious issues in the bullpen.

Cade Horton is gone after having season-ending elbow surgery. Matthew Boyd went on the injured list with a left biceps strain. Phil Maton is dealing with right knee tendonitis, Hunter Harvey is battling right triceps inflammation, Ethan Roberts has a finger laceration, Daniel Palencia has a lat strain, and Caleb Thielbar is dealing with hamstring issues.

On Sunday, Chicago put Riley Martin on the 15-day injured list and is now expected to be out nearly two months with a flexor strain.
