The Chicago Cubs are one of the teams that have some weaknesses on their roster. Despite that, they are tied for the NL Central lead with a 16-9 record and have won nine consecutive games. The team has some struggles in terms of starting pitching depth on the major league level, and was one of the suitors for a free agent. However, they did not land him as he chose to sign with another team instead. Let’s take a closer look at what we know about the situation and what it means for the Cubs going forward.
The Chicago Cubs were outbid for free agent Lucas Giolito
The Cubs were one of the teams that were interested in free agent starting pitcher Lucas Giolito. However, he has decided to sign a contract on Wednesday with the San Diego Padres. The contract is a one-year, $3 million prorated with a mutual option for the 2027 season. Giolito had multiple suitors, though, as Jon Heyman is reporting that the Cubs did offer a contract, but were ultimately outbid. At this point, Chicago’s offer has not been made public, but it was less than what Giolito wound up signing for.
Giolito made 26 starts (145.0 innings) with the Boston Red Sox last season. He finished 10-4 with a 3.41 ERA and a 56:121 walk-to-strikeout ratio. He is a former All-Star and Chicago has a glaring need for starting pitching. With Cade Horton out for the season and Justin Steele expected to return at some time this year, the depth is a big question mark. However, the Cubs have shown the ability to be productive as starters are sixth in ERA, third in WHIP, third in hits per nine, and fourth in walks per nine.
It is clear that the front office is interested in adding a veteran starting pitcher. It will be intriguing to see if they continue to look in free agency or even make a trade for a veteran in Triple-A to bolster the starting rotation.
