Chicago White Sox All-Star right-hander Shane Smith struggles to start the season, with the White Sox optioning him to Triple-A Charlotte. Through three starts, the former Rule 5 Draft pick has a 0-2 record with a 10.80 ERA and 10 earned runs in 8.1 innings.

Smith’s struggles started in spring training. In four starts, Smith had a 10.13 ERA and walked nine, and allowed 12 earned runs in 10.2 innings. Smith also had hit five batters, which is a concerning amount.

“Yeah, well, first of all, I think a lot of credit goes to Shane,” Janish said to Knights reporter Kendall Smith. “He was, pretty upfront with understanding that, you know, he wasn’t himself on the field up to this point in the season. And, yeah, hopefully it’s a short stint. At the end of the day. It’s getting him back into a rhythm and getting consistent. I mean, the guy was a Major League All-Star last year, and we’re hoping to get him back into form pretty quick.”
The White Sox used this approach with shortstop Colson Montgomery last season after he struggled. Montgomery hit .174 with a .669 OPS in seven games before going to work with White Sox director of hitting, Ryan Fuller, in Arizona.
Smith should hopefully only be down with the Knights until mid-May. But really, he will determine his own path from here.
Smith will need to find what made him great after the All-Star break last season. The 26-year-old had a 4-1 with a 3.17 ERA in 11 starts in the second half.
