Chicago White Sox swap out veteran catcher with former Rockies backstop
The Chicago White Sox have received little production from the catching position this season. Both, Edgar Quero and Reese McGuire, have White Sox catchers dead last in batting average (.153) and home runs (zero).
Because of this production, the White Sox have opted to make a change, with a new backstop coming up to offer a different look.
The Chicago White Sox opt to get rid of Reese McGuire for Drew Romo
After taking the first game of the series against the Washington Nationals, the White Sox designated McGuire for assignment. To take McGuire’s place on the active roster will be catcher Drew Romo, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Charlotte.
McGuire, 31, hit .172 with a .445 OPS and was not great behind the plate either (-31 defensive runs saved). The White Sox signed McGuire as a free agent when catcher Kyle Teel went on the injured list (hamstring).

Romo, 24, was claimed off waivers from the New York Mets in January and was designated for assignment in February. Romo was then outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte a day after his designation for assignment.
While in Charlotte, Romo has been great. In 17 games Romo is hitting .298 with a .946 OPS and is third on the Knights in home runs (four).
Romo has big league experience, playing in 19 games between 2024 and 2025 with the Colorado Rockies. While with the Rockies Romo was a .167 hitter but provided solid defense behind the dish (21 defensive runs saved).
A switch-hitter like Quero, Romo will likely hold things over until catcher Kyle Teel returns. Teel is currently waiting to go on a rehab assignment, which, once it’s complete Romo could be optioned back to Triple-A.
