Former players among those linked to Chicago Bulls GM job

Monday was hopefully a step in the right direction for the Chicago Bulls. With under a week to go in the regular season, the franchise announced they have fired both Artūras Karnišovas and Marc Eversley, ushering in a new era for the franchise.

It was much needed as well.

Chicago will miss the playoffs again this season and is headed for another lottery pick as the rebuild continues. It was clear that the franchise was struggling under this leadership, missing out on draft picks and failing to land any big players in free agency. It’s a mess to put it simple. But now, this offseason gets interesting.

The Bulls will have to hire a new vice president as well as general manager. They may also have to hire a new coach depending on what they do with Billy Donovan. And already, the rumors are starting to swirl regarding potential general manager candidates.

Former players connected to Chicago Bulls general manager job

It’s very important that the Bulls get this next set of hires right. The last regime has set them back already and this won’t be an easy rebuild to complete. Chicago does have some resources to work with, however.

On Monday, hours after the news of the firings, the Bulls were connected to three candidates — Kyler Korver, Mike Dunleavy Jr., and Landry Fields. Here is what Kurt Helin of NBC Sports wrote on the candidates:

Former Bulls sharpshooter Kyle Korver, currently an assistant general manager with the Hawks, is one of the names league sources told NBC Sports is connected to the job. Other names that sources said were connected to the job early on include former Atlanta Hawks GM Landry Fields, current Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy (this may be more of a wish list play by the Bulls, it is highly unlikely Dunleavy leaves Golden State), current Minnesota GM Matt Lloyd (a Chicago native who worked for the Bulls for 13 years), and CAA agent Austin Brown (this would be following in the footsteps of the Lakers and Knicks, who hired former agents as GMs and had some success with them).

All three options, as well as Matt Lloyd would be intriguing candidates. Fields and Korver have helped turn around the Atlanta Hawks as they are headed to the playoffs this year.

Meanwhile, Dunleavy has been working in the Warriors’ organization since 2018 and took over as general manager. But that does feel like a long shot at this stage.

Whatever the Bulls do, they need to make sure they get this right.
