Indiana Fever facing Caitlin Clark backlash after WNBA free agency decision
WNBA free agency is now in full swing, and Caitlin Clark fans are anticipating some big news from the Indiana Fever.
Clark is not a free agent. She is one of three players who remain under contract with the Fever for 2026, alongside Aliyah Boston and Makayla Timpson. However, aside from this trio, there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding Indiana’s roster for the upcoming season.
This is exactly why the Fever front office has been working hard to build a line-up around Clark heading into her third season. Indiana made one of its first moves in free agency on Thursday, but it’s not exactly the one the fans have been looking forward to.

Reports emerged on Thursday that the Fever have struck their first free agency deal. This comes in the form of veteran center Damiris Dantas reportedly agreeing to a new deal with Indiana. While the details of the contract were not made public, it now appears that the Fever will get one of their key rotation pieces back for 2026.
Dantas is no star. However, she provided quality minutes off the bench for head coach Stephanie White last season. In 38 games played in 2025, the 6-foot-4 center-forward averaged 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in 11.6 minutes per contest.
While this news was met with excitement by some fans, others expressed their disappointment. Clark fans, in particular, were clearly anticipating a bigger name. After all, the likes of Kelsey Mitchell, Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull, to name a few, remain unsigned.
“Fever going to waste CC the same way the Buffalo Bills been wasting Josh Allen,” a comment on X read.
“Cc gone have to play 40* mins a night,” another said.
“Fever are going to run it back so that when they don’t make it as far as they did last year- they will blame it on Caitlin Clark. ‘they are better without Caitlin’ I see you,” a user wrote.
“@stephenhsimon please fire fever entire front office!!! Kelly and Amber are the most clueless FO in sports. They don’t know how to build team around CC. You guys are just wasting CC’s time. Catchings only won 1 championship with Kelly as GM. Was that coincidence???” a reaction read.
“@AmberLCox I don’t know if you’re aware of this but, most CC fans, which is most of the Fever fans are giving the @IndianaFever 1 game to show us what’s important to you. If it’s not run and gun Showtime Fever from post-Olympics 2024, we’re out. This is a terrible start to that!” said another.
“Hell nah. I want young, fast pace offensive with CC’s system. Dantas can’t run at all. Too slow,” declared a fan.
Clark supporters can be a passionate bunch, and these reactions are a testament to this.
To be fair, it’s just the second day of the WNBA’s free agency negotiation period. Fans can anticipate more moves from the team in the coming days.
