It’s Time to Move the NFL Draft Back
We’re bored. All of us. The fans. The SUPER fans. The media. The straitjacket media… although they’re always unhinged.
Bored to the point of fans turning on each other, micro analyzing a million mock drafts, coming up with far-fetched trade scenarios, and referencing the JJ-Chart as the holy grail of draft trades on the daily.
The NFL can cure the malaise-meets-mutiny mindset of fans by simply moving the NFL Draft UP on the league calendar, and there’s really no justifiable reason not to do so.
With the NFL Draft kicking off on April 23rd, the lapsed time from key NFL dates looks like this:
76 Days after the Super Bowl
53 Days after the Underwear Olympics concludes
46 Days after the Tampering kickoff/REAL start of Free Agency
Take the last date alone. Teams have gotten that first wave of Free Agency out of the way, and have over a month to wait for the draft.
Yawn.
“BUT PRO DAYS!!”
Yes, I understand that Pro Days have to happen as well, but Indiana on April 1st was the outlier and the last of all Pro Days. Everyone else was done in March.
“OKAY, BUT TOP-30 VISITS!!”
I call redundancy. The Ravens had Top-30 visits with the likes of QB Taylen Green, WR KC Concepcion, EDGE Zion Young, DT Caleb Banks, OT Max Iheanachor, & DT Kayden McDonald. Some other dudes you’ll hear about on Day 3 as well but I’m saving the word count here.
FUN FACT: Guys like Banks & McDonald also had formal interviews with the Ravens at the Combine. The team likely attended their Pro Days. Redundant. And all of the above names of note were present at the Combine. Teams are permitted 45 interviews at the Combine – use them wisely.
MORE FUN FACTS: The NFL used to allow teams 60 interviews at the Combine until a handful of years ago when they dropped it to 45. Teams could’ve consolidated the interview process to March and saved wasted energy. Just saying…
As for those top-30 visits for players who weren’t at the Combine? The fringe guys? The misfits? The Day 3 promising guys and the small school hopefuls?
Go to their Pro Day in March! If the college isn’t holding a Pro Day then they’re typically involved in Regional Pro Days at some capacity.
Crisis averted.
If the NFL truly thinks teams need essentially the entire month of April to get a plan of action for the draft approach, they’re kidding themselves. Most teams have their boards ready to roll, while just making minor tweaks along the way.
Instead, what do we get as NFL fans?
Three-plus weeks of excessive mock drafts that have us scratching our eyes out (here’s to looking at you, Chad Reuter, he of the worst mocks of all time), in-fighting amongst the fans about which positions matter the most in Round One, etc.
Are Bain Jr’s arms too short? Is Fano a wise pick? Is wide receiver logical in Round One? Why is Sadiq a terrible pick? Maybe we should run 20 more daily mocks to decide what’s definitely not going to happen?
It’s madness.
My proposed solution is simple: move the NFL Draft up to the first Thursday of April.
Eradicate the weeks long wait for something that’s ready to roll. If the NFL is worried about sharing space in the sports media world, this is actually smarter than sitting on it, in my opinion.
MLB Openers are all behind them. March Madness has concluded. Yes, the Masters is this week, but – in this scenario – the Draft and the Masters main events aren’t truly at the same time or even on the same day.
Imagine, as fans, a sports week that went as follows:
FINAL FOUR: Saturday
NCAA MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP: Monday
MASTERS: Thursday through Sunday (Saturday/Sunday being the important part)
NFL DRAFT: Thursday through Saturday (Thursday then Friday being the important part)
Sports Nirvana.
Even bumping it up just one week would have the prime Draft days on Thursday and Friday with the NBA playoffs starting on Saturday. Can’t lose!
But the NFL is like, “nah hold out for 2+ additional weeks and let the fandom suffer and self-implode!”
Fix this, NFL. Save us from ourselves.
