OTL: Post-Draft Overreaction Time!
The weeks following each year’s NFL Draft are always fun. I’m not sure if it’s just a Charm City thing, but it always feels the Ravens have somehow drafted the 8-12 best players available. While I’m going to continue to be slightly conservative in my expectations, I’m here to confirm there’s room for excitement.
As for the media pundits, it’s a mixed bag:
Baltimore @Ravens Draft Grades:

Fox Sports | A-
CBS Sports | C+
SI | B-
B/R | A-
How would you grade their draft? #RavensFlock pic.twitter.com/K8Nyz0g7db

Obviously, some picks were head-scratchers compared to consensus rankings, but I fully expected the lack of star power in this year’s draft to make things interesting. At the end of the day, the Ravens got better last weekend.
Interestingly, outlets can’t seem to agree on how much better they really got:

It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out come September, but I can’t help but feel the Ravens will be better than twelfth-best in the league at the end of the year. For starters, the team’s biggest weakness got a major facelift in the offseason:
“I’m happy, excited to be here.” @vegaioane17 pic.twitter.com/nwupH6o95l
— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) April 28, 2026
I’m glad we got Vega over Crosby. People will look at last years film and still say we should’ve drafted Bain. But the key thing is the nixed Crosby trade has actually worked out much better in our favor. We needed a guy like Vega on the Oline.
— Alex (@Alex_1228__) April 28, 2026
I fully expect Vega Ioane and John Simpson to immediately upgrade the Guard position. Further, while the Center spot is one of the biggest remaining question marks, coaches and players have raved about Corey Bullock’s potential. With Coach Dwayne Ledford coming in to help out across the board and better play on either side of him, I have no doubt Baltimore can sort the position out.
Meanwhile, Zion Young has fans enamored:

— Cole Jackson (@ColeJacksonFB) April 28, 2026
EDGE Zion Young recorded a 17.4% pressure rate in his last season at Missouri, which is 5.7% higher than any Baltimore EDGE rusher in 2025. Dre’Mont Jones led the unit with an 11.7% pressure rate.
Here are more stats from his past season:

No recency bias.
Not using the benefit of hindsight.
I’m more excited about Zion Young than any other edge players drafted by the Ravens in the last 5 years.
The motor. The edge setting. It’s a floor that the other selections just haven’t had.
He’s different.
— Matt Wise (@TheMattWise) April 28, 2026
He’s a cross between Za’Dairus & McPhee for me. Heavy, violent hands. Looking to destroy the pocket. Inside rush dimension.
But the pass rush upside is exciting. Young has done a lot just with the bull rush & speed-to-power game. #Ravens
He’ll have tools to win with his hands. https://t.co/7sWkRNpbZD
— Dev Panchwagh (@devpanchwagh) April 28, 2026
If Young can match either of Za’Darius Smith or Pernell McPhee’s impact, he’ll be a huge addition to an EDGE room that needed an influx of talent. While I still feel they could benefit from a veteran presence (Jadeveon Clowney would be perfect), it’s another spot I have full confidence in brass to solidify.
Alongside these spots, I’d label “pass catchers” as the next-biggest concern heading into the weekend, with WR and TE both needing reinforcements. The Ravens made some surprising picks to fill the latter, but few teams have a better track record of unearthing talent at the position.
As for Matthew Hibner, Dev Panchwagh seems to feel pretty good about what he’s seen:
What I like from what I’ve seen of Hibner so far: the speed up the seams is real. He can get separation. Faster on vert routes than Kolar for example.
He looks fluid in his routes & he’s got natural feel & instincts in the red zone.
I like that plus his blocking upside. #Ravens

On the WR front, however, things get more interesting. Again, fans are excited, but this is where I think they may be jumping the gun:
Ja’Kobi Lane’s route running needs refinement…
but THIS right here is a glimpse of what it can become.

When Elijah Sarratt was asked which NFL players he’d compare his game to, he listed a few

The Ravens have depth at wide receiver. That is a sentence that has never been said in franchise history
— Josh Berman (@NextNetworkJosh) April 28, 2026
I’m also excited about the potential Lane and Sarratt could unlock in Declan Doyle’s system, but I’d lean more to the perspective Josh Berman has – Baltimore has depth, but still has question marks. Underdog Fantasy Football seems to agree, at least in terms of immediate production:

After all, isn’t that the reason fans have mixed opinions about who the WR2 will be?

For my money, it’ll be Rashod Bateman, as well. We’ve seen how strong his route running is – Who’s to say a new system that seems to favor WRs over TEs won’t help him breakout? I’m excited to see Lane and Sarratt battle with Devontez Walker for WR3 level production, but wouldn’t expect much more out of the gate.
Otherwise, GM Eric DeCosta (or was it the head honcho Steve Bisciotti?) seems to have found some intriguing late-round prospects, as well:

I love the idea of Rayshaun Benny being able to step in with an understanding of Minter’s defense, and you know it’s something if even Jason LaCanfora is giving EDC credit.
As for Adam Randall, I couldn’t be more pumped for preseason tape. Oh, and then there’s the QB room!

As Nikhil points out, neither of these contracts are likely to mean much:
Agent tweet. Pretty much all UDFA contracts are 3 years in length. The guarantees are the important thing, and the absence of any mention here indicates…there aren’t any. https://t.co/kEGOUi4LZ7
— Nikhil Mehta (@nikknowsball) April 28, 2026
All jokes aside, what may have been most fun was the opportunity to better understand the new staff’s vision for this team. For more on that, check out this awesome article outlining HC Jesse Minter’s influence on the 2026 strategy:

We’ve got all summer to continue evaluating the class and see how things fit, but the knee-jerk reactions sure are fun!
