Chicago Cubs: Moises Ballesteros gets top-5 MLB rookie ranking
The Chicago Cubs snapped their three-game losing streak with a convincing 8-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. Pete Crow-Armstrong highlighted the victory with a three-run home run, just his second of the year. Edward Cabrera continued his strong start to his Cubs tenure, earning the win.
Rookie designated hitter Moises Ballesteros was 0-4 with a walk in the win, a hit-less performance that ended a short five-game hit streak and two-game home run streak.
Despite this, Ballesteros has been on a role to start out the season, proving he is the hitter that Chicago envisioned he would be when they added him to the Opening Day roster.

So far this season, Ballesteros is hitting .364/.419/.667 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 26 games this season. When Bleacher Report released their top-15 rookie rankings on Wednesday, Ballesteros came in fifth:
“Moisés Ballesteros seems destined to be a DH, given that he’s played less than a game’s worth of time in the field currently between catcher and first base. That’s fine, his bat plays enough to justify him as a DH.
“Rated the No. 34 prospect in baseball by B/R’s Joel Reuter entering the season, Ballesteros is currently hitting a crisp .397 with a 1.136 OPS. Granted, manager Craig Counsell has protected Ballesteros to this point, having him face almost exclusively right-handed pitching. If he continues to hit anything like this against righties, though, it will be hard not to give him more of a look against lefties.
“Even if Ballesteros ends up being a first base/DH type that plays primarily against right-handed pitching, there’s enough thump in the 22-year-old’s bat to think he’ll be a key cog for the Cubs for a long time.”
As noted above, Ballesteros, a left-handed batter, is almost exclusively facing right-handed pitching. His struggles against lefties are well-documented, particularly in the minor leagues as he has only 140 plate appearances in his young MLB career.
Presumably, limiting Ballesteros’ at-bats against left-handed pitchers will be the plan all season long. However, as long as he continues hitting right-handed pitching well, he will continue to put up gaudy numbers.
