In an effort to do so, the Cubs moved quickly after the news on Steele broke by claiming a former second-round pick away from the cross town Chicago White Sox. While the move may not generate major headlines on the surface, it’s the type of low-risk gamble contenders often make when trying to survive a long season with a battered pitching staff.

Left-handed pitcher Doug Nikhazy is a former second round pick of the Cleveland Guardians in 2021. The Mississippi product was designated for assignment by the Guardians earlier in April, had a brief stint with the White Sox, and now has joined the Cubs organization. Interestingly, Nikhazy has minor league options remaining, so upon being claimed by the North Siders he was optioned to Triple-A.
Nikhazy has just six major league innings under his belt, but he is built up as a starter. With little to no stand out depth in Triple-A Iowa, beyond standout Vince Velasquez, Nikhazy quickly becomes a strong candidate to receive a call-up if the need arises, which, given the current state of the roster, feels more like a matter of when than if.
On the mound, he isn’t overpowering, sitting just below 90 mph, but he compensates with deception, extension, and a deep mix of pitches. That combination allows him to disrupt timing and keep hitters guessing, giving him a path to carve out value despite the lack of high-end velocity.
With the Cubs’ pitching depth already stretched thin, this move is less about immediate impact and more about adding another controllable arm to the system. Nikhazy may not be stepping into the big-league rotation right away, but his presence in Triple-A gives Chicago another potential option if injuries continue to pile up.
