Sophie Cunningham facing backlash after Indiana Fever admission

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

Indiana Fever fans were delighted when the team announced the news about Sophie Cunningham.

The 6-foot-1 guard was an unrestricted free agent and was free to sign a new contract with another team. However, Cunningham ultimately decided to remain in Indiana for at least another season. This is after the 29-year-old signed a one-year contract with the team.

Cunningham was a key cog for the Fever in her first year with the team last season. The front office clearly wants her back, and they made sure she wasn’t going anywhere.

Cunningham addressed her new deal in the most recent episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast. As it turns out, she wasn’t all that pleased with how things turned out.

When asked if she felt the contract was better than what she had expected, Cunningham got brutally honest. The former Missouri Tigers star admitted that this was not the case.

“I’m not even gonna lie to you, though, it’s a little, kind of, frustrating,” she said. “Because I’m someone who, I kind of shoot it straight, if I wasn’t feeling good, or was hesitant, I think I would have said something and been honest.”

Cunningham went on to say, though, that this development has motivated her to prove herself in the upcoming season.

“It was a little weird,” she continued. “But, you know what? I think this was a great wake-up call to not get comfortable. I think it kind of lit a fire under my [expletive] even more.”

Fans react to Sophie Cunningham’s comments on Indiana Fever contract

Although Cunningham expressed that she believes she’s part of something special in Indiana, more than a few fans were not pleased with her honest admission. The outspoken star is now on the receiving end of some backlash from a bunch of disgruntled supporters.

“You are not that good sis. Lexie is better and younger…and she don’t talk negative [expletive],” a comment on X read.

“She’s an average player at best. Average is being kind. What she thought she deserved?” another said.

“I mean she a mid role player on a team thats got two super maxes damn near,” a user wrote.

“Sophie Cunningham avg around 7.9 pts 2.8reb 1.4 ast her notable performance years 2022/23 avg around 12pts she’s 29 dealing with injuries etc she should be happy she still has a chance,” pointed out another.

“She always talks like she’s the best player on the team. It’s hilarious,” a reaction read.

“What does someone who averages eight points and three rebounds a game expect? She’s a social influencer more than a basketball player,” declared a viewer.

Whatever the case, Cunningham will be back in 2026. She may not be 100% happy with the deal she got, but that will not stop her from leaving it all on the court to help her team.
