Bears connected to depressing trade, and it isn’t what you think

Chicago Bears

When it comes to the trade front, the main Chicago Bears player we keep hearing about is tight end Cole Kmet, who appears to be the odd man out with Colston Loveland at the top of the depth chart and rookie Sam Roush already making noise.

For now, though, it appears that the Bears are planning to hold on to Kmet, who is under contract through 2027.

But are there are any other Chicago players that could potentially be on the trade block between now and the start of Week 1?

The Bears seem pretty content with their roster as currently constructed, so you wouldn’t think they would be interested in making any drastic moves. Of course, a whole lot can change over the next several months, so there is no guarantee Chicago will stand pat before September.

In fact, Jacob Infante of Pro Football Network has floated a new possible trade candidate for the Bears: linebacker T.J. Edwards.

Could the Chicago Bears trade T.J. Edwards?

Edwards was limited to just 10 games last season due to injuries, and Infante feels it may be time for Chicago to part ways with the veteran.

“The Chicago Bears have shown a preference towards adding speed on defense, which is a mantra that T.J. Edwards doesn’t necessarily meet. His 77.1 PFSN LB Impact Score is the worst score he’s had since 2020, and he’s been a liability for them in coverage. He’s still a smart, physical linebacker, so a team in need of an upgrade at the position could offer a Day 3 selection to take Edwards off Chicago’s hands,” Infante wrote.

The problem is that the Bears don’t have any other instant solutions at inside linebacker.

Unless Chicago wants to make Noah Sewell (who managed a 41.9 overall grade at Pro Football Focus in 2025) a full-time starter, it doesn’t have a clear answer to relieve Edwards if it does move him.

Plus, Edwards has been a very valuable member of the Bears’ front seven for three years running now. He arrived in free agency back in March 2023 after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and racked up 155 tackles, 2.5 sacks, three interceptions and seven passes defended during his debut campaign in Chicago.

Then, in 2024, Edwards finished with 129 tackles, four sacks and a pick before posting 67 tackles, an interception and five passes defended in limited action last year.

Trading the 29-year-old in exchange for a Day 3 pick at this stage of the offseason probably wouldn’t be advisable for the Bears.
