Bulls linked to blockbuster Donovan Mitchell trade in potential stunner

The Chicago Bulls are entering a pivotal offseason in which they could attempt to overhaul a roster that won just 31 games this past season, especially considering that the Bulls are armed with significant cap space and a pair of first-round draft picks.

The Bulls are expected to be major players in NBA free agency, and considering they possessions pick Nos. 4 and 15 in the NBA Draft next month, they could also be very active on the trade front.

Chicago has already been connected to a variety of players both on the open market and via potential trades, so fans should absolutely buckle up for an exciting summer in the Windy City.

So who exactly will the Bulls pursue? We’ve heard the whispers about Zion Williamson, but the chances of Chicago making a move for an oft-injured star like that seem pretty slim. Then you have Jalen Duren and Austin Reaves, both of whom are risky possibilities in free agency.

But could the Bulls shock everyone and make a serious play for Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell? Andrew Hanlon of Pippen Ain’t Easy refuses to rule it out.

Mitchell has two years remaining on his contract with the Cavaliers and has made it clear he would prefer to stay in Cleveland. But would the Cavs consider moving the seven-time All-Star after another embarrassing playoff exit?

“Chicago’s new executive VP of basketball operations, Bryson Graham, has a sound strategy — wisely use draft assets and cap space to acquire young talent and then patiently develop it. But there are always exceptions,” Hanlon wrote. “… Mitchell doesn’t make sense for Chicago at the moment, but teams should never close the door on a top-20 player.”

Hanlon also mentioned Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen as possibilities for the Bulls.

If Mitchell does become available, Chicago may decide to check in. The Bulls certainly have the assets to entice the Cavaliers in a potential trade, and while there are absolutely questions about whether or not Mitchell can be the true No. 1 option on a championship team, you could try to pair him with somebody else.

I actually think Chicago would be better off staying the course rather than splurging on Mitchell, but the Bulls are one of the teams that may decide to make a push for the 29-year-old if he does become available.
