Chicago Bears: Mayor outs Gov JB Pritzker for being against bill for stadium
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson had a defiant message in Springfield on Wednesday, holding onto the outdated hope that the Chicago Bears would remain in the city.
Earlier this week, Johnson planned to use his political leverage to sabotage the Illinois Senate passing a megaprojects bill that would aid the Bears in property taxes to build a stadium in Arlington Heights.
The Bears are set to meet with the NFL Stadium Council in a couple of weeks to provide progress on where the team stands in potentially building at the site in Arlington Heights or in Hammond, Indiana.
The council previously told the Bears that Chicago was a no-go for a new stadium, and only Hammond or Arlington Heights were viable options.
Johnson outed Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker’s view of the bill, saying that he doesn’t “like” the bill. He noted the Bears want amendments added to the bill in the Senate.
“We already know the governor doesn’t like the bill. The Bears do not like the bill,” Johnson said, via the Fox 32 Chicago. “There are members in the Senate…both sides of the aisle that do not like the bill.
“So we have a bill that no one likes, that would give, potentially, property tax relief to a major corporation, and you have mayors here with very limited options in which we’re trying to find property tax relief for everyday people.”

Pritzker has said he wants a bill to pass that would keep the Bears in Illinois and building in Arlington Heights. However, he noted changes would have to be made in the Senate. It’s unclear if those remarks are what the Mayor is referring to or if Pritzker has other feelings behind closed doors.
Johnson wants the Bears to remain at Soldier Field, something that would be a non-starter for team president/CEO Kevin Warren.
Johnson argued the state needed to better fund local government, citing that the cost of living has increased. It’s a notable argument given that a privately owned NFL franchise valued at billions of dollars is asking for a freeze on property taxes.
