Chicago Cubs bench Happ and Swanson amid slumps, start top prospect Ramirez
The Chicago Cubs are looking to snap a seven-game losing streak and turn around a feeble run where they’ve lost eleven of their last thirteen games. They’re also looking to keep from falling further in the standings of the NL Central Division, where they’ve fallen to third place, behind the always tough Milwaukee Brewers and the surprising St. Louis Cardinals.
More News: Chicago Cubs’ feeble run has forced a change in trade deadline targets
And while yesterday’s lineup from Cubs manager Craig Counsell was deemed a “shake up,” today’s lineup probably offers the bolder moves.
Veterans Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson, for example, are on the bench.

More News: Chicago Cubs: Counsell may still be too conservative in dealing with losing streak
Happ is in the midst of a 1-for-24 slump and is hitting .188 since May 1 with just 6 RBIs in 20 games played this month. On the year, he’s hitting .214, but still posting a respectable OPS of .779, mostly due to his walk rate and early-season power numbers.
Swanson, meanwhile, has posted an ugly .155 batting average in May with just one home run and 4 RBIs. He’s got a respectable 27 RBIs, but is slashing an ugly .189/.289/.349 on the year.
Happ and Swanson DO need some time to reset, but Counsell could sit just about everyone on his starting roster right about now. Nobody is doing well and everybody is struggling through serious doldrums. Chicago has managed just 9 hits—with only 2 runs scored—over their last 3 games.
With the two Cubs vets sitting today, Michael Conforto gets another start in left field for Happ and Nico Hoerner gets moved over to shortstop to sub for Swanson.
Pete Crow-Armstrong is again leading off. He went 1-for-4 in yesterday’s game in the no. 1 slot, delivering a single. Hoerner has been moved from cleanup to the more appropriate no. 2 slot. Moises Ballesteros, meanwhile, gets maybe one last vote of confidence as the DH, batting seventh amid an ugly 3-for-51 stretch (.058) over his last 17 games.
The one point of excitement in Sunday’s lineup is that the Cubs’ no. 2 prospect Pedro Ramirez will be getting his first major league start and playing second base. The 22-year-old Ramirez had been tearing up Triple-A this season after impressing everyone in the organization with an outstanding spring training for the big league Cubs. He got the call up from Iowa on Friday when Matt Shaw was placed on the 10-day IL due to mid-back tightness.
Lefty Shota Imanaga (3.38 ERA), coming off a season-worst outing against the Milwaukee Brewers, will take the mound, facing off against Astros starter Peter Lambert (3.57 ERA).
The full lineup

Here’s the full lineup for Sunday’s game against the Astros at Wrigley Field:
1. Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF
2. Nico Hoerner, SS
3. Michael Busch, 1B
4. Alex Bregman, 3B
5. Michael Conforto, LF
6. Seiya Suzuki, RF
7. Moisés Ballesteros, DH
8. Carson Kelly, C
9. Predo Ramírez, 2B
