Dillon Thieneman already making waves in Chicago ahead of rookie season
The Chicago Bears plugged their hole at safety during the 2026 NFL Draft. The team used its No. 25 pick in the first round to select former Oregon Ducks star Dillon Thieneman.
Chicago added him after losing Kevin Byard III, Jaquan Brisker and Jonathan Owens in free agency. The veterans signed with the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts, respectively, leaving the team with a clear need at the position.
Thieneman impressed during his collegiate career. He played two seasons for the Purdue Boilermakers before entering the transfer portal and moving to Oregon. The 21-year-old appeared in 15 games in 2025, recording 96 combined tackles, one sack, two interceptions and five pass deflections. His efforts earned him a first-team All-American selection.
Bears fans look forward to seeing Thieneman in action next season. He is expected to start and play opposite Coby Bryant, helping the team make a deeper postseason run.

Chicago’s 2026 rookie class accompanied Thieneman. They all posed for pictures on the field, along with Clark the Cub.
Thieneman is expected to participate in OTAs starting on Wednesday, or the team’s minicamp from June 9-11. ESPN projects him to have a strong rookie season and finish fourth among rookies in combined tackles. The Bears will rely on his production as they face the toughest schedule, coming off a Divisional Round loss to the Los Angeles Rams in 2025.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are in the middle of their season. They are third in the NL Central with a 29-22 record and will look to bounce back after they lost 4-2 to Houston on Saturday.
