Chicago Cubs: What? Ben Brown is one of the best pitchers in baseball
The Chicago Cubs, just like that, have now won three of their last four games after an ugly ten-game losing streak that had fans and pundits wondering if they were a broken team.

One bit of consistency through these recent worst of times and the current best of times is Ben Brown.
The 26-year-old, since being put into the starting rotation due to an injury to Matthew Boyd, has been pitching like an ace. In his five starts this season, he’s 1-1 with a 1.73 ERA. On the season, he’s got a 1.92 ERA through seventeen appearances and is averaging more than one strikeout per inning.
On Saturday, against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, Brown delivered another stellar outing, allowing one earned run on three hits through seven innings in a 6-1 win over the Cubs’ division rivals. Except for one brief moment in the fourth inning, the 6-foot-6 right-hander was in command throughout, showing maturity and confidence along with a pitch arsenal boasting a new sinker and changeup.
“I thought the last at-bat to Gorman was just a maybe a little symbolic of how Ben’s changed,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters. “He threw four changeups to Gorman, and that’s just something that couldn’t happen last year, right? It wasn’t going to happen, and just tip of the cap to how he’s improved, and that was a real sign in there.”
Brown is one of MLB’s best

On paper, as well as on the field, Brown’s excellence so far this season has been noted.
Writer Matt Clapp recently dug through the numbers to highlight exactly how good the young pitcher has been and how his execution this year actually places him among the best in MLB.
Per Clapp:
Ben Brown ranks among MLB pitchers with at least 50 IP…
ERA: 7th
FIP: 4th
xERA: 7th
xFIP: 9th
AVG: 3rd
GB%: 8th
HR/9: 2nd
GB/FB: 8th
That’s pretty impressive stuff from someone who came into spring training without any guarantee that he’d even break camp with the big league Cubs.
Becoming his best self

Brown had shown flashes of brilliance throughout his young career, but had been unable to deliver consistently good work. Still, the Cubs kept him on the roster for those flashes of brilliance and for the promise that he’d eventually be able to put everything together for a grab at his full potential. The new pitches perfected over the offseason, along with the confidence that comes along with a more fully-developed arsenal, might have pushed him to that next level of development.
No matter the reason, Brown’s rise has come at exactly the right time for a Cubs staff reeling from injury and inconsistency. Without any exaggeration, he’s become the linchpin for the team’s rotation.
But Brown, himself, seems to be taking this all in stride.
“That was exciting,’’ Brown said of Thursday’s outing. “This is something to build off, but you’re never as good as you think you are and never as bad as you think you are.’’
