Chicago White Sox: Miguel Vargas gets high praise from GM Chris Getz

There may not be any team in Major League Baseball more surprising this season than the Chicago White Sox. After losing 100+ games for three consecutive seasons, no one thought Chicago would be much of a factor in 2026. Rather, fans just hoped for some steps in the right direction while also expecting the team to finish below .500.

Of course, with 106 games remaining, this could still happen. As it stands right now, though, the White Sox are 29-27 and in second place in the American League Central Division. If the season were to end today, Chicago would be in the MLB postseason as a Wild Card.

Chicago White Sox GM Chris Getz has high praise for Miguel Vargas

Of course, Munetaka Murakami has been the subject of the majority of White Sox headlines this year, and deservedly so. After all, he is proving every other MLB team that passed on him wrong by leading the AL in home runs, runs, and RBI (and, well, strikeouts).

But Miguel Vargas has emerged as a legitimate contributor in the lineup as well. In ESPN’s most recent MLB power rankings, Chicago was ranked 18th, but the outlet also reported some praise for Vargas from GM Chris Getz:

“General manager Chris Getz texted that Vargas had been one of his early trade targets when he stepped into his role. ‘Miguel’s makeup, aptitude and instincts for the game has unlocked All-Star ability,’ Getz said.”

In 55 games played, Vargas is hitting .231/.364/.467 with 12 home runs, 31 RBI, and nine stolen bases. He was, of course, originally acquired by the White Sox in 2024 in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers for Tommy Edman.

Edman, by the way, has not played yet in 2026 due to recovering from ankle surgery.
