Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

Sophie Cunningham’s first season with the Indiana Fever did not exactly go according to plan. While she made big waves on and off the court in her debut campaign in Indiana, the 6-foot-1 guard’s season was derailed by injury.

Cunningham tore the MCL in her right knee in August. The injury required season-ending surgery, bringing her campaign to an abrupt end after 30 games. Cunningham averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.7 triples in 25.2 minutes per game.

Cunningham put in the work in the offseason. She did everything in her power to make sure that she would be ready for the first game of the season. The time has finally come as the Fever host the Dallas Wings in their season-opener on Saturday.

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham raring to go

Cunningham spoke to reporters ahead of the first game of the season. When asked about the status of her knee injury, the former Missouri Tigers star announced that she is 100% healthy and ready to go.

“It felt good,” Cunningham said on her return to the court during the Fever’s preseason games. “I mean, it’s been 11 months since I played organized basketball. I got cleared at the end of March. So just getting back out there, getting my feet wet, just playing, reads, reactions.

“Knee felt great, so I’m happy about that.”

Cuningham did admit that she didn’t immediately feel like her old self upon her return. This is not surprising considering how long she was sidelined with a major knee injury.

“Oh, it took me a few minutes,” she said. You know, that first wind, it definitely got me. But after I felt like the first quarter, I kind of felt more like myself.

“My knee didn’t hurt, so I was happy about that. And then once that’s over with, knee pains and stuff like that, I feel like the basketball will come.”

Cunningham and the Fever face an immediate test in their very first game of the season against Paige Bueckers and Co. Indiana suffered a 95-80 loss to the Wings in the preseason, and they will be eager to make amends on Saturday.
