Chicago Bears board of directors announce decision on Indiana stadium

The Chicago Bears will not call the Windy City home for much longer. Even though their lease at Soldier Field in Chicago runs through 2033, the organization wants the team to play in a state-of -the-art facility that will cost $2 billion starting in 2028.

After the state of Illinois failed to pass legislation that would have given the Bears and their ownership group tax breaks, it became all the more apparent that the franchise was going to move, and the alternative location was Hammond, Indiana.

On Friday morning, the organization officially announced their intentions.

On Friday morning, the Bears’ board of directors released the following statement:

“We believe a world-class stadium project in Hammond will transform the region, connecting Northwest Indiana and the South Side of Chicago through the Loop and across the neighborhoods and suburbs stretching north of the city,” the statement read, in part.

This being said, ESPN’s Courtney Cronin reports that there may be some hope the team remains in Chicago, albeit just a tiny sliver.

“While I’m being told that the Bears announcement on Hammond is ‘real’, i.e. not a leverage play, a league source told me that the Bears leaving the state is not a done deal,” Cronin posted on X. “Per source, Indiana is in the lead right now, but ‘Illinois can still get back in the race,’ granted the state has a lot of ground to make up after not passing legislation that would have insured the Bears property tax certainty.”

This all being said, the likelihood that the Bears will agree to a deal with the state of Illinois without the tax breaks seems improbable, and the likelihood that the state will get anything acceptable done on time is even less probable.
