Chicago Blackhawks linked to heartwarming move that fans would love

The Chicago Blackhawks will have some money to play with this offseason, so they are expected to be rather active players on the free-agent market.

Of course, the question is whether or not any top free agents will want to join a team that has missed the playoffs six years in a row and finished in last place in the Central Division this season.

On the bright side, the Blackhawks have shown obvious signs of improvement the last couple of years, and they have a growing crop of young talent that could be on the cusp of making some noise and finally returning to the postseason.

So, who could Chicago pursue on the open market? We have heard the Blackhawks connected to Alex Tuch multiple times, but whether or not Tuch would actually want to leave a contending team like the Buffalo Sabres to play for a squad that totaled 72 points in 2025-26.

Surely, there are more realistic options, and Ron Luce of On Tap Sports pitched a potential option that will tug at the heartstrings of Hawks fans: Patrick Kane.

Kane spent this season with the Detroit Red Wings, but with Dylan Larkin recently requesting a trade and the Red Wings toiling in mediocrity, it seems rather unlikely that they will re-sign the Chicago legend this summer.

That’s where Luce thinks the Blackhawks could come into play.

“Naturally, there are a few other questions that stem from the Larkin report. For Detroit, will Patrick Kane re-sign if Larkin is moved? Doubtful. Perhaps there is a reunion there?” Luce wrote.

Kane spent the first 15-and-a-half seasons of his career in Chicago, helping lead the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup championships and earning nine All-Star selections along the way. He also won the Hart Trophy during the 2015-16 campaign after leading the NHL with 106 points.

Of course, the 37-year-old is a shell of the player he once was. Chicago traded him to the New York Rangers midway through the 2022-23 season, and he has spent the last three years with the Red Wings. He’s still productive, having registered 16 goals and 41 assists this past year, but he is no longer a superstar.

Still, Kane would represent a nice veteran addition for the Blackhawks, and it’s hard to imagine the fanbase saying no.
