Bears’ potential veteran WR addition receives clear update from insider

Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears‘ wide receiver room appears to be in some trouble heading into 2026. Not only did the Bears subtract both D.J. Moore and Olamide Zacchaeus during the offseason, but Rome Odunze just revealed that he might never be the same as a result of the foot issue he dealt with last season.

The Bears signed Kalif Raymond and selected Zavion Thomas in the third round of the NFL Draft, but neither player seems likely to be a major contributor next fall. Raymond is really nothing more than a depth option, and Thomas was viewed by most as a reach on Day 2.

So, could Chicago potentially add a veteran wide receiver to bolster the group?

Names like Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen and Deebo Samuel are still out there, and it would make sense for the Bears to at least consider one of them.

Dan Wiederer of The Athletic provided an update on the situation during an appearance on 104.3 The Score, and let’s just say he does not expect Chicago to move quickly.

Will the Chicago Bears sign a wide receiver?

Wiederer was asked about the Odunze situation and whether or not it was concerning enough for the Bears to sign a wide out, and he didn’t seem to sense any urgency on that front.

“I don’t need to go as far as the latter,” Wiederer said.

Wiederer added that his concern level is “moderate” when it comes to Odunze’s foot, noting that everyone should be monitoring the receiver’s separation and explosion in training camp, which begins in August. He also feels Chicago has “answers” if Odunze isn’t quite the same.

To be quite frank, I’m not sure how many answers the Bears actually have. Yes, Luther Burden III had a very impressive rookie campaign, but he dealt with injuries, as well. Outside of those two, Chicago doesn’t really have any proven options at wide receiver.

Sure, the Bears have Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet — not to mention rookie Sam Roush — at tight end, but it’s important for Caleb Williams to actually have some wide outs he can trust, and if Odunze is compromised, his life could become pretty difficult under center.
