Indiana Fever veteran sends message amid lack of playing time
The Indiana Fever brought in veteran Monique Billings via free agency in the offseason. The 6-foot-4 forward signed a two-year deal worth $1.6 million.
Billings has started in all seven games she’s played for the Fever this season. During that stretch, the 30-year-old has averaged 5.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals in 20.1 minutes per contest.
Billings’ playing time has fluctuated of late, though. She played 11 minutes on May 22 against her former team, the Golden State Valkyries. She was back to her usual minutes in their rematch against the Valkyries on May 28, logging 19. However, she played a season-low eight minutes in Saturday’s disappointing loss to the Portland Fire.

Indiana Fever vet Monique Billings addresses inconsistent playing time
Billings spoke to reporters during Wednesday’s practice. One of the questions she faced was about her lack of playing time, specifically over the past couple of games.
Billings, however, is not stressing it.
“Just focusing on what I can control, which is just getting in my extra work, showing up, watching film, just doing the intangibles,” she said.
Billings is an experienced player, and she knows her role on the squad. She is also still acclimating to her new team. As she said, head coach Stephanie White has stressed to Billings the need to give herself grace.
“You have to keep showing up, you have to keep putting in the reps,” Billings continued. “I’m a vet, so I know I’m here to serve and give direction to my teammates, my younger teammates, and to continue to be the example.”
Billings should eventually carve out a more consistent role for herself in the rotation as the season progresses. The Fever have played just eight out of the 44 games this season, and there is obviously still a very long road ahead.
At this point, Indiana is also struggling to find its footing, starting the season 4-4. Billings could provide a much-needed spark in the frontcourt as a revamped Fever side continues to search for its identity this year.
